about
African American Spirituals also known as Negro Spirituals came from hardship and down times while working hard in the fields picking cotton and other crops. The darker shade black folk were usually out in the field (Field Negro) laboring. These Field Negros managed to create hymns and songs. These songs were created to motivate one another, plot to escape, or sometimes just to entertain themselves.
lyrics

Your lips big, your skin black, and your hair nappy / where you get it from your mammy or your damn pappy I dunno cause I was raised by my grand mammy / with the big arms put a hurting on a ham samich (sandwich) Squeaky boy where your damn manners/ you know your grandma raised you right kept you ass out the damn slammer you’re right she put the fear of GOD in my thoughts/ saw the consequences before I ever got caught so I reframed from the n*gg@rish/ I never understood why they called me n*gg@ and shit I know some white boys that a bang on ya / for the hell of it and put some blood stains on ya so don’t be calling me a jiggerboo / you n*gg@ you / whether you meant in support or it’s critical My black skin is a gift from the most high / when they say you got bad hair they're a damn lie

You’re black as midnight, we need you in the field/ picking cotton all day so eff (F!ck) how you feel we can’t associate with house negros / they can’t relate by status or clothes over all, my overalls, with grass stains / we're gon' sing these spirituals to ease the pain there’s pain in my heart but throbbing in my knees / we're gon' work these fields until the LORD set us Free
